We don’t know anyone who says to their eye doctor, “My cousin is an amateur optometrist — it’s his hobby. He can do my LASIK way cheaper than you.” But we hear about businesses that hire amateurs to build their websites.
Pretty much anyone can build a web page these days — there are tools everywhere to build pages using simple point & click functionality.
The problem is, unless you have a deep understanding of web design, the site you (or your high school-aged nephew, or your secretary’s friend who only charges $25 an hour) build won’t be very good. In fact, it may hurt your business.
You don’t hire a web designer to push a mouse around. You hire him/her to think. You pay for:
- Years of experience backed by continuous research on:
- Useability
- Web standards
- Web technologies
- User interaction
- Deep knowledge of visual design
- Reliability & attention to detail
- Regular availability
But, It Still Seems Expensive
We spend a lot of time fixing sites that were built “on the cheap”. These sites aren’t cheap, they’re expensive, since you pay for everything twice.
A True Story
In 2009, we rebuilt a website for a customer from the ground up. The client had paid someone else who claimed to be an experienced designer several thousand dollars to build the site. When we 1st looked at it, our jaws dropped — it was painfully bad. Most of the navigation didn’t work; the visual design was strictly amateur, and it didn’t present any useful information. If you had seen it, you would never have given the owner your business.
We delivered a new site for a fraction of the cost, and the customer is one happy clam.
Design Considerations
- Solve navigation problems
- Useability — consideration of how people use web pages
- Text optimized for the way people read on a screen
- Accessiblity for impaired users & search engines
- Guiding the user to conversion goals (getting the user to “yes”)
- Testing and proofing in multiple browsers
- Communicating clearly with you, the client
We have over 10 years experience designing and administering websites, which we apply to ensure your website is built right. And that’s the definition of a bargain.
